Handmade Fishing Tackle: Why Custom Jigs Catch More Fish
After decades of fishing Charleston waters, I've learned that custom, handmade tackle often out-fishes mass-produced lures. Here's why, and what specific designs consistently produce for lingcod, rockfish, and other bottom species.
Why Custom Tackle Matters
Mass-produced jigs are designed to catch anglers, not fish. They look good in the store, but they're built for shelf appeal and manufacturing efficiency—not optimized action in the water.
Custom tackle is designed for specific conditions, depths, and species. Each jig is tuned to perform in Charleston's currents, depths, and structure. The difference in catch rates is noticeable.
Flutter Jigs for Lingcod
Flutter jigs are flat-sided lead jigs that wobble and dart erratically on the drop. This action imitates injured baitfish—irresistible to predatory lingcod.
Key design features:
- Flat profile creates water resistance for erratic fall
- Heavy weight (12-24 oz) gets down quickly in deep water
- Strong hooks to handle 30+ pound fish
- High-contrast colors: green/white, blue/white, pink
I make my own flutter jigs using custom molds. The weight distribution and hook placement are dialed in for Charleston depths and currents. See our lingcod techniques guide for how to fish them.
Shrimp Flies for Rockfish
Shrimp flies are soft plastic or feather attractors fished on long leaders above a heavy weight. Rockfish species hit these aggressively.
Effective shrimp fly characteristics:
- Bright colors: pink, orange, chartreuse, red
- Soft material that pulses in current
- Size 2/0 to 4/0 hooks for various rockfish sizes
- 18-24 inch leaders spaced 2-3 feet apart on main line
Multi-hook shrimp fly rigs catch rockfish at different depths simultaneously. It's not unusual to hook two or three fish on a single drop when you're into a school.
Lead Fish (Cod Jigs)
Lead fish are simple but deadly—a fish-shaped lead head with a large hook. The streamlined design gets down fast and stays vertical in current.
These work for both lingcod and larger rockfish. Tip the hook with bait (squid or herring strip) for added attraction. The combination of visual appeal (the jig), scent (the bait), and realistic action produces consistent results.
Blade Baits
Blade baits are thin metal lures that vibrate intensely when jigged. The vibration creates sound and visual flash that attracts fish from distance.
Blade baits excel when fish are scattered or not aggressively feeding. The vibration draws them in when subtler presentations fail.
Copper Pipe Jigs
One unconventional but effective design: copper pipe jigs. Cut sections of copper plumbing pipe, add weight internally, paint, and rig with hooks. The copper creates unique flash and color that fish respond to.
These are particularly effective for lingcod in low-light conditions or turbid water. The copper flash is visible when other colors disappear.
Why Handmade?
Handmade jigs allow customization impossible in mass production:
- Exact weight for specific depths and currents
- Hook size and placement optimized for target species
- Color combinations proven on local waters
- Quality components—strong hooks, durable paint, proper rigging
- Ability to repair and modify as needed
