First Time Charter Fishing? Everything You Need to Know

Practical Guide
First-time anglers on charter boat

If you've never been charter fishing, the experience might seem intimidating. Don't worry—charter fishing is designed for all skill levels, including complete beginners. Here's everything you need to know for a successful first trip.

Do I Need Fishing Experience?

No. Charter fishing is perfect for first-timers. We provide all equipment, show you how to use it, and teach you techniques as we fish. Many of our most successful trips include anglers who've never fished before.

Your captain handles navigation, finding fish, and making sure you're fishing productively. Your job is simple: follow instructions, reel when told to reel, and enjoy the experience.

What Happens on a Typical Trip?

Arrival: Show up at the dock 15 minutes before departure. Bring your fishing license, food, drinks, and personal items.

Safety briefing: Before leaving the dock, we cover safety equipment locations, rules, and what to expect on the water.

Transit to fishing grounds: The run to productive spots takes 15 minutes to over an hour depending on what we're targeting. Use this time to relax and watch for marine life.

Fishing: We'll set you up with rods, show you the technique, and position the boat over productive structure. When fish bite, we'll coach you through the fight and landing.

Return trip: After fishing, we head back to the dock. Total trip times range from 6 to 10 hours depending on what you've booked.

Fish cleaning: We clean and fillet your catch at the dock. You take home fish ready to cook or freeze.

Will I Get Seasick?

Some people do, most don't. If you're worried about motion sickness:

Most people feel fine once we're fishing. The act of reeling fish distracts from motion, and the excitement overrides any queasiness.

What Should I Bring?

Will I Actually Catch Fish?

Fishing success varies, but most trips produce catches. Lingcod and rockfish are year-round and provide consistent action. Seasonal species like tuna, salmon, and halibut have specific seasons but are productive when targeted during their peak periods.

No captain can guarantee fish—we're dealing with wild animals in a dynamic ocean environment. But with 45 years of experience on these waters, Pacific Charter Services knows where to find them and how to put you in position to catch.

What If the Weather Is Bad?

Safety comes first. If weather conditions are unsafe or unpleasant, we'll contact you in advance to reschedule. This is more common in winter and spring; summer trips rarely cancel for weather.

When rescheduling, we work with you to find alternative dates. If rescheduling isn't possible, deposits are refunded for weather-related cancellations.

Is Charter Fishing Safe?

Yes. Commercial charter boats are inspected and certified by the Coast Guard. Captains hold commercial licenses requiring extensive training and experience. All required safety equipment is aboard and in good condition.

We fish in conditions we're comfortable with and return to port if weather deteriorates. Your safety is the top priority—always.

Should I Tip the Captain?

Tipping is customary for good service, similar to restaurant tipping. Standard is 15-20% of the trip cost. If you had a great experience, caught fish, and learned something, showing appreciation is welcomed.

Can I Bring Kids?

Absolutely. Charter fishing is a great family activity. See our family fishing guide for age-specific tips and what to expect with children aboard.

Private Charter vs Party Boat

Pacific Charter Services operates 6-pack private charters, meaning your group (up to 6 people) has the boat to yourselves. This is different from party boats where you're grouped with strangers. Private charters offer more flexibility, personalized service, and a better overall experience. Learn more in our charter comparison guide.
