Summer Fishing Guide: June-August in Coos Bay

Seasonal Guide
Summer fishing off Coos Bay

Summer brings peak tourist season to the Oregon coast, and for good reason—the weather is at its best, the ocean calms down, and fishing opportunities diversify. June through August offers some of the most exciting fishing of the year off Charleston, with multiple species available and excellent weather windows for offshore trips.

Albacore Tuna Arrives

Summer's marquee fishery is albacore tuna. These powerful pelagic fish typically arrive in late July or early August, following warm water currents northward. Once the bite is established, tuna fishing dominates the offshore scene through August and into September.

Albacore trips are 8 to 10-hour offshore adventures targeting schooling tuna 25 to 50+ miles from Charleston. When conditions are right and fish are located, action can be non-stop. Landing a limit of fresh albacore—some of the finest eating fish in the ocean—is an unforgettable experience.

Ocean Salmon Season

Summer typically includes ocean salmon fishing opportunities. Chinook salmon (kings) stage offshore before entering rivers, and trolling for them can be excellent in June, July, and August depending on annual season dates.

Salmon fishing involves slower trolling with downriggers or divers to get lures or bait down to feeding depth. It's a different pace than tuna fishing—more methodical, more focused—but landing a 20 to 30-pound Chinook salmon makes the wait worthwhile.

Halibut: Prime Season

Halibut season often includes multiple dates throughout summer. These trophy flatfish provide thrilling fights and premium table fare.

Halibut trips run 8 to 10 hours to reach productive grounds. We use electric reels to manage the deep water (200-300 feet), making the experience accessible for all anglers. When you connect with a "barn door" halibut, you'll remember the fight for years.

Bottom Fishing Stays Strong

Lingcod and rockfish remain available throughout summer. While tuna and salmon get much of the attention, bottom fishing continues to produce consistently.

In summer, lingcod often move to deeper water following cooler temperatures and baitfish. We adjust our strategy, fishing deeper reefs and offshore structure. The fish are there; it just takes knowledge and experience to locate them.

Crabbing Continues

Dungeness crab season typically extends into mid-August. Ocean crabbing pairs well with bottom fishing or can be combined with salmon trips for variety.

By late summer, some crabs begin molting, which can affect meat quality. Early to mid-summer is generally better for crabbing than late August.

Summer Weather Advantages

Summer offers the calmest, most predictable weather of the year. Offshore trips that would be marginal or impossible in winter become routine in July and August.

Morning fog is common but usually burns off by mid-morning. Afternoons are often clear and mild. This consistency allows for planning trips well in advance with confidence they'll run as scheduled.

Family Fishing in Summer

Summer is peak season for family fishing trips. School is out, weather is pleasant, and the variety of species keeps everyone engaged.

Bottom fishing trips work well for families with younger kids—shorter durations, steady action, and less offshore exposure. For families with older kids or teenagers, tuna or salmon trips offer more adventure and offshore excitement.

Longer Daylight Hours

Summer's extended daylight allows for longer fishing days without pre-dawn departures. An 8-hour trip can start at 6:00 or 7:00 AM and still provide plenty of fishing time plus the transit to and from grounds.

This is especially appreciated on offshore trips where the run to tuna or halibut grounds takes time. More daylight means more time actually fishing rather than running in darkness.

Booking Summer Trips

Summer is the busiest charter fishing season on the Oregon coast. Weekends and popular weeks (Fourth of July, for example) book months in advance.

If you're planning a summer vacation to Charleston, book your fishing trips as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Weekdays often have better availability than weekends. See our booking guide for tips.
